More and more people are asking me if they NEED an SSL certificate?

Problem: They don’t generate a lot of sales or leads from their website. It seems almost pointless having a website, and now there is another cost – an SSL Certificate?

Firstly, I would ask, how often do you add a new blog or news item to your website? If you never add new content and if your honest, rarely look at your website. I would say don’t bother. It will just be another cost that won’t really help. Most people don’t really NEED an SSL certificate. Their websites don’t need the encryption as they aren’t using / keeping anyone’s personal data.

Why do I say this?

Google and other search engines want to differentiate websites and rank them. They use an algorithm to do this and it is constantly being updated. Most of all they want website with good relevant content, and website owners who care about their websites to be at the top. There are many things they use to determine who cares, who doesn’t. And who is trying to just get to the top without any work! One of the biggest factors towards ranking is regularly updated new content. This shows you are keeping your website up-to-date and that you care.
Therefore, if you don’t know the last time you uploaded a blog was, adding an SSL certificate won’t help your rankings a huge lot. You will probably be in the same position with or without it – nowhere!

Sorry to come down hard on those who aren’t great bloggers! But I am VERY passionate about everyone knowing what they should be doing with their website! A website can be a huge investment and if you don’t use it the right way, you may never make a profit from it. You would never have 2000 flyers printed, never give them out and then wonder why your flyers didn’t work! The same can be said about websites. If you have a website built and then never give it any time or attention, Google will give you the same amount of time and attention – none.
I totally understand that some people don’t know what to do, but rest assured, there will be many more blogs to help you along your way!

So back to SSL Certificates!!

Essentially, they add an extra level of encryption to your website to “secure” your website. Once added, you will see HTTPS instead of HTTP in your domain name. Along with the padlock and “secure” wording.

So why are SSL Certificates important now?

2016 saw two different Google representatives advocated for HTTPS: Maile Ohye in a joint BrightEdge webinar “A View from Google” called HTTPS a “requirement”. Speaking on the main stage at Share16 in October, Thao Tran said “HTTPS and making sure your site is secure is an imperative at this point… Google will start marking things non-secure… The future of the web is a secure one, and so make sure people in your organization understand HTTPS, and it should be on the road map” for 2017.

Now we are in 2018 and website are being marked as non-secure as well as stop pages being added. This is a warning page telling your visitors they are about to use a non-secure website and warning them not to visit. There may be nothing nasty on the website at all, the only sin is there is no SSL certificate.

Recommendation – SSL Certificate

Therefore, I am recommending to all my clients to have an SSL certificate added to their website. Avoiding the stop pages being the biggest reason. Nothing will kill your leads and sales more than Google warning people not to visit!

However, I stand by my first point, there is no point adding an SSL certificate to your website if you don’t update new content regularly. If you’re barely ranking on Google, most likely no one will click through to see any stop pages.

With this in mind, until 30th June 2018 Kellys-Webdesigns is having a Summer Sale! Get a Full SEO Update + SSL certificate (for one year) for £400.00 reduced from £730.00 – Save £330.00! Call today – 01455 363300! We also have great deals on websites!!

Why is website maintenance so important? If you don’t regularly maintain your website you will be running the risk of getting hacked. Furthermore, you may find that certain aspects of your website stop working. The last thing you want is for your customers to experience problems when they visit your website. In this article, we share a real story involving one of our clients who experienced problems because they did not regularly maintain their website.

Clive’s story: How I fell into the trap of poor website maintenance

Clive’s business website was built a few years ago. Clive used to carry out the odd update to WordPress and any security plug-ins. However, over time, Clive became really busy and forgot to do these. One day, his website crashed and because he hadn’t run any updates for some time, his website could only be recovered from an earlier stage. Unfortunately, he lost all of his blogs and product pages.

“I didn’t keep an eye on my website. Then, when it crashed, I spent days trying to recover my website – I lost all of my blogs and product pages. It was a huge mistake and I won’t be making it again!”

Clive now has a website maintenance package in place, which means that he doesn’t have to worry about any updates or security issues anymore.

At Kellys-Webdesigns, we always keep up-to-date with best practice for website maintenance. Furthermore, we are always aware of any changes to Google guidelines and SEO recommendations.

Effective SEO for business is important for your website because it helps your customers to find you online. SEO stands for search engine optimisation and it is a way to increase traffic to your website. In this article, we discuss the reasons why it is vital to optimise your website. We have pulled together 5 key reasons why good SEO is so essential for your online presence below:

Why is SEO for Business is so Important to Your Website?

  • Create an online presence – you might have the best offering in the world, but unless you are online, how are people going to find you? SEO will help you find new customers across a range of geographical areas, so you’re not just limited to local business.
  • Boost your existing online presence – the rules around SEO change frequently, so if you had your website optimised a few years ago, the chances are your website might be falling foul of the latest Google guidelines. Make sure your SEO is up to date and reflects best practice – always check with an SEO expert.
  • Increase your search engine ranking – good SEO will bring more traffic to your website, which means Google will consider your site to be of interest. The higher up the search engine you go, the easier it will be for people to find you.
  • Attract the right customers – do you know what people are searching for online? Choose the right search phrases, known as ’keywords’ to find your ideal customer.
  • Become an authority in your industry area – the bigger your online presence, the more trusted you will become. People buy on trust, and this is why SEO is so important for business.

At Kellys Web Designs, we always keep up to date with the latest Google recommendations for search engine optimisation. Furthermore, we will always make sure that your website is professionally optimised to reflect the needs of your business.

Who owns your domain name? Unfortunately, not every webdesigner out there is looking out for their client’s best interests. Don’t worry, I’m not here to bash the competition and have a moan! I just wanted to share a story with you that happened to a new client of mine.

After a year of terribly service, thousands of pounds spent and countless stress my client decided they couldn’t work with their current webdesigner anymore. I was recommended to them and after an initial meeting, they decided to go ahead and use my business. Their previous webdesigner was based in India and this had cause them many issues. Therefore, as my business is based in Leicestershire and is less than a mile away it seemed liked a great fit from the start.

So, we started the process and I looked into how their website is currently being hosted and who has control of their domain name. After a little research, I found out that my new client didn’t own their domain name! Consequently, they had a problem.

This came as a blow to them as they had trusted the previous webdesign company. Furthermore, the previous webdesign company had registered my new client’s domain name, in the webdesign company name. Therefore, on the official WHOIS database my new clients aren’t the registered owners and have no rights, it belonged to the previous webdesign company.

Who owns your domain name? Kellys-Webdesigns

This is not an uncommon story and can be complicated and costly to fix. Furthermore, what usually happens is the webdesign company charge you a huge amount to release your domain to you. Consequently, with no other option, most people are forced to pay this or stay with a company who is providing poor service.

So please check and make sure you own your domain name. You can check here – http://whois.domaintools.com/

All you need to do is enter your domain into the box and press “Search”. If you don’t see your details and information, contact your website provider straight away. Even if there is no problem now, if you wish to move away in the future you will need control.

In addition if you register or anyone ever registers a domain name for you, please make sure it is in the correct business name. Please ask, double check!

It seems so simple now! The idea of business networking, but it took a while for it to really sink in! My business is based around selling to other businesses so the typical types of marketing are really hit or miss for me. I needed to be where the business people are. Not everyone who picks up a magazine or sees a flyer will need a website. If fact the majority won’t. However, at a business networking group I have a lot more opportunity to meet business owners – my main target market.

Not that I’m suggesting you ever sell to the room. That is one of the major turn offs to prospective clients and networkers! The idea is to build relationships with people so that even if they don’t need your services right now, they recommend you to someone who does. See my top tips for successful business networking to get the most out of your time and money.

Networking Top Tip One

Be on time – or even early. Yes, you might risk being the first there and feeling a little awkward. But the great impression it gives far outweighs any negatives. It shows your keen and serious about your business. It is also 100% better than the other option – risking being late!

Networking Top Tip Two

Try to speak with everyone. Even if it’s just to introduce yourself. But remember, everyone likes to feel important. Don’t just exchange a business card at a glance and barley say a word before moving onto the next person. The idea is to build relationships and not to go home with the most cards. No one wants to feel you are using them just for their contacts. Or worse still, only trying to sell them something. Business owners are people to, the same rules still apply.

Networking Top Tip Three

Be prepared. Usually at business networking groups there is time for open networking. This is where people mingle, chat and have coffee. Then there is a more formal section where you go around the room introducing yourself and your business. You normally get around 60 seconds. Therefore, be prepared. Have business cards on you for the open networking and plan what you are going to say in your 60 seconds. Nothing is more appealing than someone who is confident. Be that person, practice what you are going to say!

Networking Top Tip Four

Don’t sell to the room. By this I mean, don’t go to the group with the intention of trying to make as many sales as possible. If you do this, you come across as someone who only takes. Don’t make your 60 seconds a sales pitch to the room. Instead, let people know how your product or service helps your customers and maybe even them. Sell them you and your enthusiasm for your business, it will make a better statement than any offer or “pitch”.

Networking Top Tip Five

Follow up. Whenever you exchange a business card with someone, follow up with them. Send them an email saying how great it was to meet them. Show an interest in what it is they do and have to offer. Better yet, is there anyway your businesses can work together to help each other? It may not seem obvious at first. But I find after a coffee and a chat most businesses can help each other. Organise a 1-2-1 with people who respond positively and continue to build that relationship.

I wasn’t always the lover of code that I am today. In fact, I was a very sporty child, more likely to be on a trampoline than a computer (yes trampoline is still my sport of choice – my other passion). We didn’t have a computer in my family home until I was 15 (yes, they were about back then!). I never thought about being a business owner or even how websites worked. I wanted to win Olympic gold or be a barrister! I wasn’t an obsessive who spent hours in their room writing code – well not back then!

Then, as happens with most people things changed. I developed a medical condition that made it hard to trampoline and harder still to be employed. But this really isn’t a story of woe. After a few trial and error ventures. Mainly trying to sell things I loved, but that nobody else really wanted to buy! I borrowed a book from the library about webdesign.

I think what appealed to me most was that all you needed was a computer and an internet connection. Two things I had access to at the time. I was 23 and still living at home so I had the opportunity and time to dedicate myself to learning a new skill.

After I completed the first task in the book I was hooked. It felt liked magic. I put in some lines of what seem like random letters and words and the screen transformed. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I felt like I had found that thing in life I was looking for. I could see how I could make money with this skill and not only that I was enjoying it. Much better than standing on market stalls!

Someone once asked me, why websites?

I spent the next year developing my skills, starting my business in 2009 and have never looked back. Don’t get me wrong, running a business isn’t all code and magic. There are even things about creating websites that don’t appeal to me as much as writing code. But I have also found a great passion for creating websites for small to medium sized businesses. I get to learn new things all the time. I get to work with many different types of business and people. It might be stressful at times, but I’m never bored! I love creating website, and I still find it just as much fun even after 8 years.

I don’t know about you, but as a business owner I find it really difficult to get that work life balance. You get on top of one thing and something else pops up! Don’t get me wrong it’s not all bad, but sometimes it does all feel like work!

A very dear friend is getting married in a couple of months and I’ve yet to finalise the hen party! In my defense, she only got engaged six months ago! Also, she really wasn’t keen on the idea as she doesn’t drink and isn’t really a crazy party animal. But anyway, me being me I’ve found an ideal solution! Instead of the conventional hen party we are going to have a trampoline party! Now anyone that doesn’t know us might think we are crazy, a bunch of 30ish year olds bouncing around. Let alone that the bride is getting married in 2 months!

But fear not! We are both members and coaches at our local trampoline club! I thought it would be a lovely idea for all her friends, students and the mums to be able to celebrate with her. Doing something she loves! So, an old-fashioned kids party with cake and balloons is in order!
However fun it sounds there is still the organising to do! Things to buy, people to invite, venue to hire the list goes on and on. As I’m sure you all know!

Work life balance, will I ever get it right!

One day I will be this super organised hero women who never forgets anything, has everything written down and is always early! Yer right!! LOL if she is real I’m not really sure I want to meet her!

Anyway, as a business owner, I constantly struggle to get the “balance” right. But when I do it feels great! They say, if you love what you do, nothing feels like work! But in reality, you can’t love everything about your businesses, there’s too much to do! So, I try and enjoy the bits I love, as I do love webdesign. I could go on for hours! And I try to get the bits I don’t love so much done first. It doesn’t always happen, but I try!

Website designer, do I really need one? It’s true you can get a basic website completely free from the likes of Goddady and Yell.com. However there is a catch, as there normally is when things come for free! They are only free for so long, then usually a high monthly cost is attached to keep your website running. This is how they recoup their costs. There are also other pit falls from setting up a “Free” website that might cost you more than having your own built for you.

Other things to watch out for with “Free” websites:

  • You only rent your website from your provider. This means you have almost no control over your website and the code it is written with. This makes SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) impossible, or extremely expensive as you will need to buy it from your provider.
  • You have little choice over the way your website looks and the functionalities provided. The only way companies can provide you will “Free” websites is to have a few templates that they use. This means everyone website is the same and more difficult to SEO. You will be able to add your logo and use your brand colours. But the nuts and bolts of your website will be the same as everyone else’s.
  • The company that provides you with your “Free” website purchases your domain name (web address) your domain name then belongs to them. Then they charge you hundreds of pounds to release it, when it costs them less than ££20 per year.
  • You can never move your website away from them, they own the code and copyright not you.
  • You have to compete with you “Free” website provider’s keywords on your website. Basically this means you are promoting which ever “Free” website company you use. Keywords are the most often used words on your website. If you have another business promoting on your website it will dilute your keywords. This make’s marketing much more difficult.

Website designer, do I really need one?

None of this is an issue with a website built by me at Kellys-Webdesigns. You will own your website copyright and all, you are able to do anything you wish with your website, it’s yours after all!
Your website can look how you want and it will be built to work for your business.

I never register clients domain names to me. If the client isn’t able to purchase a domain name, I am happy to do so. However I always purchase the domain name and register it in their name – you will own it.

I request to place one link back to my website. But only if the client agrees, so as not to affect the website’s keywords.

There are many other benefits to getting an expert website designer to create a website for you. If you would like to find out more please contact me. I’m more than happy to chat through the right option for you.

Thanks for reading,
Have a lovely day,
Kelly
